WATCH: Dems join Elizabeth Warren in supporting elimination of Electoral College

WASHINGTON (KFTK) — Increasing numbers of Democratic 2020 hopefuls are calling for the U.S. to abolish or change the Electoral College.

Earlier this week, Sen. Elizabeth Warren introduced a petition that would ditch the electoral college system in favor of a straight popular vote. Since then, other candidates have followed suit.

Beto O'Rourke said Tuesday there was "a lot of wisdom" in Warren's plan, while Kamala Harris said she was "open to the discussion" during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Additionally, mayor of San Antonio, Texas and 2020 Democratic hopeful Julián Castro told BuzzFeed News Wednesday he'd like to "do away with" the electoral college as well.

Critics of the electoral college system say it leads to candidates focusing their campaigns on just a small handful of states.

Two presidential elections this century have been won by candidates who lost the popular vote — former President George W. Bush in 2000 and President Trump in 2016.

Tuesday, Trump admitted in a tweet he used to favor popular vote over the electoral college, but has changed his stance on it.
