SWANSEA, Ill. (KMOX) - An Illinois family is fighting to get their pet bobcat back.

The animal was confiscated from a Swansea family's home last month by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources because bobcats are classified as dangerous animals in the state and are illegal to own them as a pet.

The family says "Capone" was born in captivity and "completely and totally domesticated. " He was neutered and declawed, and "truly a gentle giant because even though he is large in size he is timid, trusting of humans and afraid of many things that do not scare the typical housecat."

Lakesha Mayweather and her family had been housing the bobcat for more than two years. There's now a petition on change.organd a GoFundMe account set up to help the family with legal costs and hopes to force that state to return the bobcat to Mayweather. They have raised nearly half of the $3,000 goal and are less than 200 signatures away from reaching their 1,000 goal.

Mayweather has been charged with unlawful possession of a dangerous animal and unlawfully importing a wildlife species into Illinois.
