The heroic story of a military dog who saved lives in Afghanistan last month has gone viral.

Army Ranger Sgt. Leandro Jasso, 25, from Washington, and Army Ranger dog "Maiko" were both killed while leading Rangers into a raid in southwest Afghanistan's Nimruz Province.

Maiko was leading a group of soldiers into a compound when an Al-Qaida militant opened fire. That revealed the militant's location, which allowed the Rangers to take out the threat without further loss of life.

A biography of the 7-year-old dog says Maiko's actions "directly saved the life of his handler" as well as "other Rangers involved during the clearance."

The biography concludes by saying, "MPC Maiko will forever be remembered by his character and the teammate he truly was."
