Guatemalan child spent weeks in Texas hospital, dies after being apprehended by border patrol

Investigation of the death is ongoing.

EL PASO, Texas (KFTK) — After spending several weeks in a Texas hospital, a 2-year-old Guatemalan boy, who was apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border in early April, died Tuesday night, the Washington Post reported.

Guatemala’s Consul Tekandi Paniagua, who was one of two sources who confirmed the death with the Post, said the the boy seemed to have contracted a form of pneumonia, however investigation of the death is ongoing. The boy, whose name was not released, spent three days in federal custody before going to the hospital.

The child is the fourth to die since December after being seized at the Southern U.S. border and taken to the hospital. The other three children were also from Guatemala, where droves of immigrants have originated to seek asylum in the U.S.

This year, Customs and Border Protection is experiencing record numbers of migrant apprehensions with unaccompanied minor apprehensions up 73% from April 2018, family unit apprehensions up 400%, and single adult apprehensions up 23%.
