Julia Crews, 37, who had worked in for the department for 13 years, resigned days after receiving charges for second-degree assault. While trying to apprehend a 33-year-old female suspect, who reportedly resisted arrest and ran, Crews meant to draw her taser, but grabbed her gun instead and shot once, critically injuring the individual, according to charging documents.

In the letter, Crews described the incident as an "innocent mistake."

Friends and family of Crews recently set up a GoFundMe page to "offset her upcoming expenses." In one day, 79 people have raised over $5,000 for the campaign, which has been shared more than 600 times already.

"It is sad that in the course of 'doing her job' she now has a battle to fight," the GoFundMe states.

Below is the letter that was sent to the Ladue mayor and police chief.
