(KFTK) - More than two dozen Sears and Kmart stores in the U.S. will be closing in October, including the last large-format store in the St. Louis area.

The Sears location in Mid Rivers Mall was listed among 26 locations that will be closing due to "a number of challenges," according to a release from Sears on Wednesday. There are still a number of smaller Sears stores in the area, including Appliance Outlets in Fenton and Fairview Heights, as well as Hometown Dealers in Washington and Waterloo.

The release states they "cannot rule out additional store closures" in the near future and will try to "preserve as many jobs as possible in the communities we serve."

Last year, Sears identified about 100 stores that were no longer turning a profit, and the majority of those locations have been shut down. The one-time powerhouse retailer that survived two world wars and the Great Depression has been calving off pieces of itself as it burns through money.
