Salute To Service: Michael Kilgus

October 04, 2018 - 10:57 am

Michael Kilgus served with the 57th Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam.

"We dropped troops into dangerous areas and flew in to get them out regardless of the dangers, and there were some very serious ones when we did," Kilgus says.

His unit also worked with Special Forces, putting them in and getting them out of trouble and Kilgus says the work they did always meant a lot of trouble.

"They were some of the most courageous men in 'Nam. And they awarded our unit with a Special Forces "CCC" patch for what we did for them. There wasn't a day in 'Nam that we didn't face danger to rescue men and I am very, very proud  of my brothers in the 57th because they were the most honorable, courageous soldiers I have known!"

Kilgus says the men he served with deserve the Hollywood treatment.

"During Tet, the North Vietnamese sent overwhelming forces at us to wipe us out, but we only had about 20 wounded and we destroyed the entire NV forces. I wish that someone would make a movie showing the courage and honor of all of my brothers!"
