WASHINGTON (KFTK) — Sen. Elizabeth Warren, (D-Mass.) wants the government to pay "gay reparations."

Warren recently introduced legislation, dubbed the "Refund Equality Act," which would pay back money owed to LGBTQ couples who were not permitted to file joint taxes prior to the Supreme Court's marriage equality decision in 2013, according to NBC News

That adds up to approximately $57 million owed, the Joint Committee on Taxation reported Tuesday. From whose pocket this money will originate was not mentioned, however.

Warren wrote on Twitter Saturday, "It wasn’t until marriage equality became law that gay & lesbian couples could jointly file tax returns—so they paid more in taxes. Our government owes them more than $50M for the years our discriminatory tax code left them out. We must right these wrongs."

In 2017 Warren introduced similar legislation, Mic reported, which "meant to refund married same-sex couples an estimated $67 million that they unfairly paid prior to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) being overturned." While the act was co-sponsored by 36 legislators, it was put on hold and therefore reintroduced this year.
