Professor Dan McGroarty joined Tim Jones to explain the lack of 'rare-earth' mining in the United States.

"We literally touch them every day, in fact I'm doing an interview with you on a smart phone," says McGroarty of the 17 rare earth elements, "in a smart phone of those 17, 9 of them are present."

Dan is concerned that the US is dependent on China for numerous materials used in everything from smart phones to smart bombs, wind turbines and F-35 jet fighters.

"The United States has deposits of the 'rare-earth', we have ceased mining them, China has not," says McGroarty.  "We're, at this point,100 percent import-dependent for 'rare earth'' that are present in every one of our technology applications."
