Mark Janus: the man behind Janus v AFSCME

The Marc Cox Morning Show
June 28, 2018 - 8:49 am

When Mark Janus started working for the state of Illinois he quickly realized he was being charged union dues, yet he hadn’t opted into any program.

The obligation to pay into a union who takes the funds and does what it sees fit didn’t sit right with Janus. Janus says it comes down to freedom to choose.

You wouldn’t be comfortable being forced to by a specific type of car for example. “If the union has such a good product, why do they have to force people like myself to pay money to a union?” asks Janus.

Thanks to Mark Janus and his team of lawyers the case was brought to the Supreme Court who ruled in favor of the worker (as opposed to the union). “We now, as workers, have the freedom to decide if we’re going to join the union or not,” says Janus.
