(KFTK) - The Loop Trolley has been a money pit since day one. They’re now facing a shut down on December 29.

Bi-State Development Agency seems to be the only chance for a reopening in 2020. Bi-State operates MetroLink and the Metro bus system. Taxpayer advocate Tom Sullivan joins the show to discuss the potential burden on Missourians if funding continues.

Sullivan tells us it just didn't get the riders it needed.

"30% of their budget was supposed to come from ticket sales and they are not even going to reach 10% of that," Sullivan says. "Last month, the numbers came in just the other day and they only had about 1,000 riders, so that averages out to about 60 a day. So they're not taking in revenue simply because very few people want to ride it."

The Post-Dispatch was first to report the trolley is shutting down at the end of the month.

However, trolley backers continue to hope the line will resume operations next year under new management.
